Understanding Tanzania's Weather
Plan Your Safari with Confidence Before embarking on your unforgettable journey to Tanzania, it's important to understand the country's weather patterns and regional climate variations. With this knowledge, you'll be better equipped to plan your safari and make the most of every moment in the wild.
Tanzania's Climate Overview
Tanzania enjoys a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging between 22°C and 31°C throughout the year. The weather is generally divided into two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season, each offering unique experiences for travelers.
Wet Season (November – May)
Green Beauty, Fewer Crowds The wet season includes the short rains (November-December) and the long rains (March-May). Though fewer tourists visit during this period, it's a hidden gem for photographers and nature lovers.
-
Lush, green landscapes
-
Fewer crowds in national parks
-
Great deals on accommodations
-
Rains vary from light showers to heavy, short bursts
-
Rainfall rarely lasts all day, so activities often continue with only minor adjustments

Regional Weather Variations
Northern Circuit Parks The Serengeti, Tarangire, and surrounding parks enjoy a relatively mild climate. Rain is heaviest in April, though not as intense as in other regions. The Ngorongoro Crater rim, sitting at 2,300 meters (7,545 feet), can be quite chilly in the early mornings and evenings.
Arusha City Often the starting point for northern safaris, Arusha is nestled at the base of Mount Meru. It boasts pleasant weather year-round, stunning views, and is a comfortable pre- or post-safari stop.
Southern Circuit Parks Parks like Nyerere (Selous), Mikumi, Ruaha, Gombe, Mahale Mountains, and Katavi are generally warmer and more humid, due to their lower altitudes. These parks offer a more remote safari experience and are ideal for travelers looking to explore beyond the popular northern routes.
