Who Needs the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

Requirements Differ by Travel History

Travelers from Non-Risk Areas If you're coming from countries not considered Yellow Fever risk areas such as the USA, Europe, Canada, and some parts of Asia you do not need to be vaccinated to enter Tanzania.

Travelers from Risk (Endemic) Countries If you're arriving from or have transited through Yellow Fever endemic countries, you must present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate upon entry into Tanzania.

Transit Information

Short Layovers Exempt If you're transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country, you're exempt from showing a vaccination certificate as long as:

  • Your stay in the transit area is less than 12 hours

  • You do not leave the airport

Vaccination Timing

Plan Ahead for Protection

  • The Yellow Fever vaccine should be taken at least 10 days before arriving in Tanzania

  • Only one dose is needed for lifetime protection

Exemptions

Special Cases Travelers above 60 years, infants under 1 year, and individuals with medical exemptions may be exempt. However, they should seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms like fever, headache, or joint pain.

Traveling Between Mainland Tanzania & Zanzibar

No Certificate Required Since Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania, no Yellow Fever certificate is required when traveling:

  • From Mainland Tanzania to Zanzibar

  • From Zanzibar to Mainland Tanzania
