7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route
The Machame Route, famously called the "Whiskey Route", is one of the most scenic and adventurous paths to Kilimanjaro's summit. Over seven days, trekkers experience lush rainforests, volcanic ridges, alpine deserts, and the icy summit zone. The extended itinerary allows for better acclimatization, increasing the chances of a successful summit. After conquering Africa's highest peak, you'll embark on a 3-day luxury safari to Serengeti and Ngorongoro, where the Big Five roam freely. This combination offers the ultimate Tanzanian adventure: mountain triumph followed by wildlife immersion.
After breakfast, transfer from Arusha/Moshi to Machame Gate, passing through charming villages and coffee plantations on the lower slopes. Registration is completed at the gate before beginning the trek. The trail winds through dense rainforest, with towering fig trees, moss-covered rocks, and the calls of Colobus monkeys echoing above. The path ascends steadily along ridges until reaching Machame Camp (2,850m), nestled in a forest clearing.
- Elevation: 1,640m → 2,850m
- Distance: 11 km
- Time: 5–7 hours
- Habitat: Rainforest

Machame Camp
Leaving the rainforest glades, the trail climbs steeply up a rocky ridge into the moorland zone. Giant heather and volcanic boulders dominate the landscape. Crossing the Shira Plateau, trekkers enjoy expansive views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding valleys. The day ends at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m), set in open moorland meadows beside a stream.

Shira 2 Camp
This acclimatization day ascends to Lava Tower (4,650m), a striking volcanic formation known as the "Shark's Tooth." Lunch is taken here before descending into the lush Senecio Forest to Barranco Camp (3,960m). Though you end at nearly the same elevation as you began, the climb high/sleep low strategy is vital for acclimatization.

- Distance: 10 km
- Time: 6-8 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert

Barranco Camp

- Distance: 5 km
- Time: 4-5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert

Karanga Camp
The trail ascends through rocky terrain to Barafu Camp (4,700m), perched on a ridge with panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This is the final base before the summit attempt. The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for the midnight climb.
- Elevation: 4,050m – 4,700m
- Distance: 4 km
- Time: 4-5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert

Barafu Camp
At midnight, the final ascent begins. The climb is steep and demanding, with freezing temperatures and strong winds. By sunrise, trekkers reach Stella Point (5,739m), rewarded with breathtaking views. The final push leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrations, descend to Barafu for lunch, then onward to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for overnight rest.
